Ways To Spot A Counterfeit iPod [SECOND VERSION]

Price: If is seems to good to be true, it probably is. This is so obvious and we hate incorporating it into our tutorials, but you would be surprised by how many ignore this. If the ipod price seems ridiculously low, it is either fake or stolen.
Apple Logo: You would be surprised at how many fake ipods do not include the Apple logo. Always check the iPod for the logo, once the logo is discovered then a quick font inspection should be next. Also, inspect the ipod packaging. 

A real Apple iPod will have the logo distinctly on the clear plastic case. A fake may have the logo on the actual ipod, but it may not have the Apple logo imprinted on the case. This is a common way to cut corners for the counterfeiter. The counterfeiter will usually focus on the obvious details, however they will generally overlook, either intentionally or unintentionally, some of the smaller details associated with the product. This is because the point is to make a cheap product and sell it for or around the retail price. To make a cheap product, corners must be cut. What will be cut out of production are details that the consumer may generally overlook themselves: Exact placements of the logo, logo fonts, etc. This is why getting familiar with the tiny details is important. Also check for the Apple logo on the welcome screen. Fake ipods generally do not open with the logo, and if they do open with an Apple logo, the logo font/image is not official. Apple font: The Apple font is distinct enough to generally make a determination of the authenticity of the ipod in question. However, it is not unique enough whereas this would be obvious. [font images]

Below is an image of a real Apple classic font: This image is show the consistancy of the Apple font. Notice the "a" on the real Nano and Classic ipod, both have the correct Apple font. The fake ipod has narrow letters and the "a" has an incorrect loop or curve at the top. Also, notice the classice logo on the box is embossed, not printed. Meaniing that it has texture, if you run your finger over it you will feel the logo. Beware of logos that are simply printed on the box, and not embossed, having no texture.

UPC code: Check the UPC code at amazon.com. The reason Amazon is preferred over other UPC checking sites, is that is will show the exact prodcut with picture.

Below is an image of an Apple iPod UPC code: The UPC is the entire code, even the numbers to the far right and left of the main code body. The full UPC code in the picture below is: 885909341320. UPC codes are generally 8-12 digits.

• Sign in to your Amazon account
• If you don't have an Amazon account: sign up here.
• Once signed in: Click on "your account" at the top right of the page.
• Now click on "sell your stuff" in the far right navigation table.
• Under the "locate item you'd like to sell" box is the UPC box.
• Before the box it should read: "search by ISBN, UPC, or ASIN:" Type in the UPC code [all digits as explained above] inside the box and click "start selling."
• The product associated with that UPC code should come up. This should be the same as the product you are investigating. [If you run the code pictured (above) through the Amazon UPC box, it should return an iPod classic.]


• Note: If you type in a UPC code from the box of and iPod you just purchased, and a beenie baby pops up, that spells trouble. Check the number again, and if you typed correctly, chances are that you have a fake. Even if the differences are more subtle, like a different model iPod, that should also raise a red flag. USB connector: Sometimes a non-standard sized USB connection is used. Often times fakes may use a mini USB-B connector, the type that is commonly found on a digital camera. However, many of the fake ipods in the open market use the correct sized USB. So always take a couple seconds to look at size of the USB connector.

iTunes or noTunes? When the ipod is turned on and connected to your computer, other than the Apple logo, iTunes should be prompted. This allows you to load, change, and configure you ipods music and videos. However, a fake ipod will not prompt iTunes. With a fake you will have to copy and paste your music into the device. All files will need to be dragged and dropped into the fake; this is fundamentally different than what happens with a real Apple ipod. If iTunes is not prompted, it is safe to say the ipod is counterfeit.

Hardware: Check the power button. The power button on a fake may be of lower quality. If so, it will look and feel inferior to the authentic Apple power button. This is another example of the corner cutting attributed with counterfeit electronics. The faker assumes the buyer will overlook a detail like an inferior quality power button. The outside of the fake may have looked pretty, but once the ipod is pulled open, the ugly truth surfaces. The real ipod circuits have the blue background, with the Toshiba brand, the fake has the green background and a no-name battery with what looks like yellow tape covering part of it.

Below is a close up of the real vs. fake ipod battery: Here again you can see the authentic Apple ipod has a battery with the correct branding/warning/numbers etc., but the fake has nothing but strange yellow tape.

Gutting the iPod: We don't recommend a buyer rip open the ipod to tell if it is fake or not, we hope that that can be determined before hand, by checking for all the other tells first, Apple fonts, packaging, UPC codes etc. Showing the insides of the real vs. fake is just to shed light on the quality difference between the fake and real, and what that will mean to the consumer. A poor quality fake may work well for awhile, but you don't have to be an expert with electronics to see the insides of the fake iPod and infer that the shoddy work will eventually crap out on you. So if you plan to buy a fake ipod intentionally to save money, just remember that you get what you pay for, and it may end up costing more in the long run if you have to keep replacing the fake ipod because it eventually dies.

9 Ways To Quickly Spot A Fake Ipod

Walk around the many electronic markets in your city and you are bound to spot something largely similar to some iPod. Apple doesn't really have a very complicated design language, so it won't be too difficult to fake at least the looks. Even established players don't create new designs and try their level best to ape Apple. (It's becoming a trend, really. Everyone's trying to rip off the big Apple. Steve Jobs must feel terribly flattered.)

Of course, if you normally keep your eyes open, you can spot a fake rather quickly. They have some or the other el cheapo element on to them which makes it look like a robbery which didn't quite go out as planned.

Here are some signs to spot a fake iPod.

1) The buttons are a dead giveaway. If they feel tacky and stubborn, no my friends, it's not an iPod.

2) Play around with the menu. If it uses more than blue and black colors and doesn't use the Podium Sans font, which Apple uses everywhere, then it's not an iPod.

3) Boot the player once, if it shows something more than just the chewed Apple logo, like some garish colors and Korean air hostesses waving out to you, stay away please.

4) Look to the backside, East Asian people print every damn certification status their 600 sq ft factory got or didn't on the back. Like FCC, TUV etc. Apple doesn't.
(They rather offer you the option to engrave 2 lines of text. Write something socially relevant like Down with music piracy. Downloading from torrents isn't illegal in Sweden.)
5) Apple also doesn't pack any other feature into its players like FM radio, Bluetooth, voice recorder (you can make use of most of these features, but you need accessories).

6) Listen to the output via the headphones for a bit. If you find that it is too loud or biased towards treble or just plain cheap, look elsewhere. Yes, there are headphones that can get worse than iPod buds.
7) iPods have a different front and back panel. The front is coloured while the rear is a shiny plate of chromed goodness. Communists don't want shiny stuff, so they dip the whole thing in a bucket of paint for wholesome goodness. (not applicable for the new Nano, but its slim enough to make you forget that)

Some don't have displays. And still look as though the iPod is turned off. Better believe it.

9) “iPod” is never written on the front panel.

Of course, these are but a few measures and most will work only when you are out shopping for your iPod yourself. If you plan on buying it online, make sure you get it from a reliable dealer who’ll also replace it if, just in case, you are delivered a fake
. 

Should You Buy A Fake Ipod?:

So you've been shopping around in your local tech market or on eBay and you've seen some fake iPods. But is it really worth buying one. I will outline the positives and negatives of Fake iPod's and let you decide if you want one. 

Positives

• Cheap - Fake iPods are very cheap  mp3 players that play music and look like the real thing, so your not going to spend much money to get one.
• Sometimes has additional features - Some fake iPod's have additional features from the real versions. For example FM radio. 
• Decent Audio Quality - Fake iPod's usually play audio quality good enough for kids and adults. It mainly depends on what fake iPod you get.

Negatives

• Audio Quality - Don't be gettin' fake iPod's if your looking for audio quality. The audio usually sucks and the earphones that come with it are just as bad. Your going to get far better results from a Sony Walkman or a legitimate iPod.
• Interface - The interface on Fake iPod's is usually pretty terrible and the screen quality isn't usually very good. The interface can be annoying to use but kids often like to see how things work and this  makes it a good option. 
• Some features don't work very well - Playing videos on fake iPod's are a bad idea as the quality wont be very good. You also have to convert the videos to the size of the screen and special formats of video where converters can be hard to find. Pictures don't come out very good either and camera's on fake iPod touches are usually only 1 or 2 megapixels. 
• Can't use iTunes to sync to fake iPod - Some people hate iTunes so this feature won't bother them but you have to use other software for syncing to fake iPod's (read: Software For Fake Ipods).
• The scroll wheel won't work - The scroll wheel on iPod Nano's and classics wont scroll instead you will have to press the buttons.

Conclusion: Fake iPods are good for kids and are very cheap but should not be used as a central media device.

Software For Fake Ipods

Because your iPod is fake you will not be able to get iTunes for your iPod and you will have to rely on other forms of loading it. I have heard that some fake iPods come with software but if this is not the case than there are other alternatives.

Windows Media Player.
Windows Media Player gets a lot of crap from people but the newest releases are actually very good and are comparable to iTunes. You can find album info, album art and it can configure the songs in the album with the right composers. Once you have organised your music collection simply plug in your fake iPod and sync your music to it. On my fake iPod I had no problems with Windows Media Player.

Manual
You can simply drag and drop songs from your library to your fake iPod but I don't like this option as much because organisation is good. It does still however work and it is very easy.

Other
I have heard of other software that can because but I will not post as it may not work. I have no need to try other software as Windows Media Player 11 does a fine job.

Problems With Fake Ipod

The trouble with fake iPods is that there are not many fixes to the common problems you encounter on fake iPods. The only problems I know how to fix are the ones that happened to my fake iPod but every iPod is different and people usually can't be bother to try fix them. Your best bet is to post on a forum where fake iPod have been discussed before and hope someone has had the same problem and fixed it. Sometimes there is a brand name hidden somewhere on the iPod and searching that name might just give you the answer.

Software error prove very hard to fix and many people can't fix it even when there is a solution.

So your going to Asia or you're on eBay and have seen a fake iPod. The general iPods will cost anywhere in between 15usd - 45usd. More can be paid if the fake iPod is a touch version or is the newest model. don't pay more the 1/3 of the price for the legitimate Apple product. If you're on the street make sure you bargain with them so that you get the best price and if they don't go low enough walk away and get one somewhere else - they won't be in short supply in the tech markets.

There will often be one or two games on most fake iPod models but they can be in other languages and they may not work. You can't new games as there is no app store on fake iPods. This said the fake iPod touches still have many features, you just can't install any more from the internet. 

Is The Audio Quality Good On Fake iPods?

The audio quality on fake iPods is standard - China standard. The audio will definitely not sound like it is out of a Sony Walkman or a real iPod but it will be satisfactory for most. It all really depends on what fake iPod you get. Some fake iPods are far better than others.

How To Improve Audio Quality On Fake iPods

• Buy some better earphones - The ones that come with the fake iPod really suck. The ones that came with mine only allowed me to hear the music but no singing. Just pay $10usd and get some decent ones.
• Get the best bit rate - Geeks will know what I'm talking about. The bit rate is the quality of the music. The higher the bit rate the better the sound and the higher the file size. The standard bit rate for most mp3 players is 128k because it gets decent audio quality without too much space. Go through your library and re-download or rip any music files that have higher or lower bit rate that 128k.
